Shows

 This week we start on a small mid Michigan trout stream that has had some great work done on it.  We don't set the world on fire, but this is a great story of sportsmen giving back.  We also dive back into the pig issue and hear from you the viewer on this hot topic.  We end with a story about shooting ranges, what they can do to be more environmentally minded, and make a little money in the process.

 This week Jenny starts us off with a bass fishing trip very close to home for her, Lake Shinanguag.  From there we stop in with one of our states premiere traditional bow makers, Jim Blecher.  We also have time to head to the campus of MSU to see just what the new shooting range there has to offer.  On this week's show we start with a very interesting look into the life of a commercial whitefish operation in the UP.  We also take a look at both sides of the hotly debated pig issue here in Michigan.  We stay above the bridge in our last story this week which is some walleye fishing in the Keweenaw peninsula.

 This week we start from my home town the city of Ludington! A few weeks back I covered their kids and ladies day tournament leading up the big weekend tournament.  I also took some contest winners out for a day of big lake fishing as well.  We also go above the bridge to stop in at a pretty unique place.  Jenny takes us to the mouth of the Two Hearted River and the Rainbow lodge.  You wont' want to miss it.

 This week we highlight just how unique our state really is.  We start with some fly fishing for carp on the Huron river with Mike Schultz.  If you like fighting big fish on a fly rod, this is something you need to try.  We then head north the cover the resent AuSable river canoe marathon.  This is like a Nascar event on a northern MI river, you don't want to miss this story.  We also get some good tips on some food plot ideas.  We mentioned the upcoming SCI event for kids as well.  Click here to get more SCI info.  If you would like the information on the other event we highlighted on the show click here for the Outdoor Sportsmen's Expo.

 This week we start with some west side walleye!  We hit two western lakes in the same day to try our hand at finding walleye.  We also tag along with a ladies team that are trying to beat the men in a recent Muskie tournament.  After that we stop in with a good friend who is doing all he can to get physically challenged hunters back in the woods.

 There is a lot of fishing to be done this time of year but don't forget about the hunting that is also right around the corner, if not already here!!! We start this week's show with last years early Elk hunt.  We tag the second largest non-typical bull ever taken in the state with our friend Kevin Johnson from Big Boys Adventure series.  We also stop in with the folks from NAVHDA - a group dedicated to the bird dogs of our great state.  We also have a summer deer hunt for you as well as a southern Mi deer hunter tries to help out a local farmer.

 This week we are in the UP!!! The far west end is a magical place and this week we get to see some fishing on one of our most beautiful lakes in the state - Lake of the Clouds.  After that we spend a little more time looking at the State park and its hunting opportunities.  If you have never been to this part of the state, your missing out. 

 This week we focus in on the northern part of the lower peninsula - Burt lake and the inland waterway.  Our first story is some of the best smallmouth fishing your going to see with our friend Gerry Gostenik.  We then travel from Cheboygan to Crooked lake along the inland waterway.  We get to see lots along the way and end up in one of my favorite northern Michigan pubs.  Enjoy!

 This week we start with fly fishing the famed rivers of Michigan!  We start with the hex hatch and move to mid day action after that.  We then head south to the Detroit River with Brian Meszaros to try our hand at some silver bass.  We also check in with a club (Two trackers 4WD club) of four wheel drive enthusiasts that are really making a difference by cleaning up the woods.

 The Detroit River is where we start this week - some jiggin for walleye gets us started.  This story was a little unique because we were fishing from a Tri-toon boat, with Captain Joe Raymer. From there Jenny takes us to Lake St.Clair for some smallmouth action with Doug Samsal where we show you how you can do it with a small boat.  We also get an update from our friends at MUCC about their 30/30 event that just took place.

 Viewer video takes center stage this week!!!  We show you some of the best spring footage sent to us this year.  Most all our video this week is turkey hunting, and we have some nice birds hitting the ground!  We also have a hunt sent to us from a former winner of our video challenge at the end of the show that you won't believe... stay tuned for our spring viewer video challenge brought to us in part by our good friends at the Ingham chapter of Pheasants Forever.

 This week we revisit kayak fishing on the Huron river.  If you have never done any kayak fishing you need to give it a try, it is simply an awesome way to fish!  We have some bow tips for the beginning bow hunters out there and we also have a new gadget to show you this week the "Text Pac".  We round out the show with some cooking tips with the Nugents.

 We start this week on the west side.  Saugatuck had an event a few weeks back that was pretty special.  Local charter boat association, local schools, the state and a group of outdoor writers all converge to help tell a good story.  We then head east to Saginaw Bay to fish with Walleye pro Mark Martin.  Mark was pre-fishing a tournament and had to work pretty hard to find the fish.  We cover both sides of the state this week, hope you enjoy!

 This week we take a break from turkey hunting and all the good fishing - to hunt for something a little different.  The elusive and tasty Morel Mushroom takes center stage on this week's show.  We start in northern Michigan, then mid Michigan, and then southern Michigan to see what its like to find these all across the state.  We also have some info on a cool event that MUCC is going to be doing soon, as well as stop in with a custom stock maker.  Hope you enjoy!

 This week we head south to the Detroit River for a really fun walleye tournament at Sinbad's - right on the river!!! We also learn a little more about a new website Bowhunter Planet.  We then head north to take  a look at a great way to spend  a summer day in Michigan, and that is canoeing or kayaking one of our many great rivers.  We end with a couple dandy ways to prepare some spring walleye with our friends at the Villagers restaurant in Holly, Mi.

 This week we start with one of the best youth events our state has ever seen.  NWTF takes close to 40 youth out into the woods in hopes of turning them into lifelong turkey hunters.  We then stop in with a tribute to the father of outdoor TV Mort Neff - you don't want to miss this feature.  We also get some tips on buying a piece of property and some big buck stories to round out the show.... lots to see this week!!!

 We hit the mighty Muskegon this week for some great late season steelhead all with flies.  We also tag along with a michigan sportsperson who was heading to Washington D.C. to speak up for all us Michiganders.  From there we hit the shallow water of Lake Michigan for some Brown Trout. As always, lots to see on this week's show.

 It is Turkey time!!!  We start this show with Jenny's opening day story from southern MI where the turkeys were everywhere.  After that we head to mid michigan where Gabe VanWormer shows us a great bow hunt for a very nice bird with no blind needed.  After that we head north, all the way to Cheboygan county where I taped and old family friend find a dandy bird on state land!!!  Its the opening week of the spring turkey season - got to love this time of year...

 On this week's show we hunt pheasants the hard way - with traditional archery equipment.  Along for the hunt are a few modern-day icons of the archery world.  Bob Eastman of Carbon Express Arrows. Jim Belcher from Sky Archery  and Jim Morrow, owner of MJC Archery.  We also have the state Turkey calling competition from Jay's in Clare, as well as some viewer video that was sent to us.  We also have a few big buck stories as well - lots to see on this week's show.

 This week we start the deer stories from the Ultimate Sport show in Grand Rapids MUCC's and The Country Smokehouse's BIG BUCK WEST!!!  Lots of nice deer and some pretty tall tales as well.  We actually start this week's show with the biggest of the bucks from Outdoorama.

 This week we get to the really big bucks of our Outdoorama show in Novi!!!  We hear some great stories and see some monster bucks on this weeks show.  The MUCC and Country Smokehouse BIG BUCK NIGHT part 2 is on this week's show!!!

 This week we start the Big Buck stories!!!!  We start off with the deer from Outdoorama in Novi.  MUCC and the Country Smokehouse helped make this event happen and it was a lot of fun.  We have about 3 weeks of great deer and great stories - hope you enjoy!!!

 This week we visit with one of Michigan's best trappers George Cullers.  We tag along on a trap line in southern MI to see what late season trapping is all about.  We also hit the hard water with some fish biologists on Lake Missaukee.  We are at the tail end of winter on this week's show.

 We start this week by chasing Michigan Chrome!!!  That is a steelhead if you were wondering.  We hit the Muskegon River with Tony Gates (a renowned Grand Rapids radio personality) and Matt Supinski the man who has written the book on steelhead fishing with a fly rod.  We also stop in with Bully's Turkey Calls at  Outdoorama and talk about this weekends upcoming turkey calling competition at Jay's Sporting Goods.  We end the show with a little crow hunting - lots to see on this week's show.

 We start this week on Saginaw Bay.  Our friends at MUCC were a part of the Mark Martin ice fishing school again this year and have some very cool footage to show us this year!  We are also checking in with a young lady who is a world renowned archery shooter in our Women in the Wild segment.  We round out the show with something we all hope we need - a good Taxidermist.  Enjoy the show!

 Pike fishing is the focus this week!!!  We stop in again with Keith Stanton the man from pikespearing.com to see what new footage he has taken over the past year or so.  We have done a show with Keith before and got some great response.  We also stop in at a local Grayling business to see a very special Fred Bear collection.  

 Sturgeon season takes center stage on this week's show!! With some new regulations this year the ice was full of eager sturgeon spearers on Black Lake.  Sturgeon for Tomorrow does a lot every year to make this a memorable season, and this year was no exception.  We also stop in at the Traditional bowhunters expo in Kalmazoo on this week's show.  If that wasn't enough we even have some steelhead tips for you as well.  Enjoy!!!

 This week we start above the bridge!  Sugar Island is a special part of our state, and if you have never been there you need to check it out.  Jenny heads to that part of the state this week to ice fish for monster Perch on Lake George with Blue Heron Fishing Charters.  After that we have a little Natural Resources News, and then we head to Nettie Bay Lodge for their annual Predator Calling Competition.  This 2 day hunt is worth seeing, and the pole at the end of the hunt is something you don't see everyday!

 Rabbit hunting takes center state this week!!! A group of fathers take their kids out for what turned out to be one heck of a day of rabbit hunting.  Lots of bunnies and lots of shooting.  As far as bunny hunts, this is as good as it gets.  We will also take a look at our top 6 viewer video's that were sent into us this year.  Lots to see on this week's show!

 This week we hit the north woods in search of squirrels!!!  We are using squirrel dogs this week with Terri and Dale Haken.  If you have never seen a dog hunt squirrels - this is your chance.   We will also have all our deer entries for our Viewer Video Challenge.  Lots of cool stuff on this week's show.

 Viewer Video takes center stage on this week's show.  We have this week and next week to take a look at most all the video's that were sent to us.  This week we take a look at all the non-deer video.  We also get a review of some of the new 2 man ice shanty's that are on the market.  You will want to see this show!!!

 This week we head to Michigan's elk country and tag along as combat-wounded Army veteran Jeremiah Jones battles the extreme elements and tries to drop a cow elk.  It's a once-in-a-lifetime tag that was donated through SCI's SE Michigan Bowhunters Chapter.  Next, we head to Jackson County and join good friend Craig Gerard and a couple of his uncles on a deer hunt during muzzleloader season.  And ice anglers, we'll show you how to transport propane safely and give you some ice safety tips.

 We start this week's show by heading to Dexter to see some nice Michigan bucks from the first weekend of the firearm season.  We then hit a small lake in southern MI to tag along with a pike fishing fanatic.  If your into pike you need to check out Keith Stanton and all he has to offer the pike spearing public!!!

 Our last show of 09 highlights some of Jenny's favorite stories of this past year.  We start above the bridge and tag along with some NRC commissioners who really love to fish.  After we get to know them we are headed south to Jenny's first story back with us here at Michigan Out of Doors.  Jenny tells a kids ice fishing story better than anyone - and it shows!!!  We also have our favorite recipe of the year Elk meatloaf - you can't believe how many people have asked for this recipe.  Enjoy, and thanks for a great year!!!

 For Christmas Eve this year we showed you 2 of my favorite segments from this year.  We start with an Elk hunt from northern MI where we take the 2nd biggest non-typical bull ever shot in our great state, and we have it on tape!!!  We also have a kayak fishing segment that had to be my favorite fishing show of the year.  I learned that fishing in that way is just way to much fun!  Hope you enjoy our first of 2 weeks of "best of" shows.  Merry Christmas -

 We are bringing you our second opening day story this week!  Jenny spent the opener in souther Mi with a hunter who has been hunting the opener for over 70 years.  The hunting was a little slow, but we introduce you to a very special hunter and his family.  From there we travel to the town of Mason for the buck pole that took place the first weekend of the season.  We also show you a group that is doing all they can to say thank you to our veterans by getting them back out hunting.  Hope you enjoy!!!

 Finally after a few weeks of waiting we are bringing you our first opening day story.  I was on state land this year and had a great time with 16 hunters in camp.  You would think that with that many guys someone would have a buck on the ground, well, you would be wrong!!!  It is a really cool story, so check out this rather unique deer camp.  After that you do get to see me fill my small buck tag off the ground with a few days left in the firearm season.  From there we take you south to Houghton Lake  to try our hand at some layout hunting.  From bucks to ducks we got you covered...

 Most of our PBS stations are in pledge right now asking for support.  So, we didn't want to show our opening day stories just yet.  We do have a great story from the Manistee river where you will learn just how to fish this time of the year.  We also stop in with a man who has been running a trap line longer than he may want to admit.  The trappers of our state are some of our most dedicated and skilled woodsmen.  You will meet a man on this show that is a great example of just that.

 Because we are still trying to get our firearm deer stories and because this show will air on Thanksgiving we are showing you a story from a few years ago.  This opening day story is a good one from northern Michigan.  We join a big group of hunters at Nettie Bay Lodge for a great couple of days.  We will also take a look at another very popular activity this time of year, coon hunting.  We will tag along with a father and daughter team that really know how to run their dogs.  This week is just another reminder of all that Michigan has to offer this time of year.

 Opening day of the firearm season has come and gone and we are still in the woods!!! So starting off this week's show is some top notch late October salmon fishing from the PM.  Join us as we tag along with some good friends from Hank's Fly Shop.  These guys know how to fish in style!!!  We also take a look at the new features in the Bad Boy Buggie with John Riggs from Ochard Buggies and he explains some tax incentives if your looking at getting one yet this year.  We will tease you with just a few of our viewer video entries as well.  Finally we will show you some really good fall walleye fishing from the Detroit River. 

 Deadly Tedly starts off this week's show - that is correct the Motor City Madman Ted Nugent gets us started this week with his very first Michigan crossbow kill.  After we hit the woods with Ted we head to the goose fields with Michigan's champion goose caller Hunter Engel.  Hunter and his dad Dave show us what a morning of goose hunting is supposed to look like.  We also have an opening day story from a few years back to get folks excited for the opener this weekend.  We rap the show with our own Jenny Olsen's monster buck she shot in Ohio.  Enjoy the show - 

 We start on the Manistee river on this week's show.  Terry Weiler is our host for the day with a couple of his buddies, back bouncing spawn on a perfect fall day.  We also show you how to sight in your gun with only 2 shots on this week's show.  For you outdoor chefs we have a great pheasant recipe from the Villager's Restaurant in Holly.  Speaking of pheasants we have a hunt that a PBS viewer was able tag along on with Bob Garner and some of his buddies.  Lots of stuff on this week's show - enjoy!!!

 We start this week's show on St. Clair chasing monster Muskie!!!  We don't find to many monsters but we do have a great time and have two boats out on the water.  Our friendly competition between boats made the day a lot of fun for a couple of first time Muskie anglers.  We also stop in with our new friends at Outcast Traditions.  These guys make traditional bows and are really starting to make quite a name for themselves.  I will be hunting with a longbow this year and I can't tell you how much fun it has been hitting the woods with just a stick and a string.  We also highlight a new product for you landowners out there looking for a way to clear problem areas on your property.  The guys from Foxworthy Outdoors may have the "Jawz" your looking for....

 This week's show has some great deer hunting footage! We start in Livingston Co. where we have a first time hunter taking a nice young buck on camera.  After that we hit the woods with Gabe VanWormer a contributing producer on our show.  Gabe is an avid bow hunter and he is able to capture some very up close footage on a very nice Michigan buck.  Using his Roscoby Riser Cam Gabe was able to get all of it on tape.  We round out the show with the good folks from the Ruffed Grouse Society.  We tag along on their gun dog of the year trail and get to see some good dog work. 

Youth take the stage on this week's program!  We start with two different youth waterfowl hunts.  One is from a state run facility and the other is on a private pond in southern Mi.  Both hunts are filled with some really excited kids and the dads that are with them have a smile ear to ear - including me and my 6 year old who tagged along for the hunt. After we hit the water we join Gabe Vanwormer from MUCC and his youth deer season that has one father daughter team tagging a first buck.  Lots to see on this week's show. 

 The show this week has the number 2 non-typical bull ever taken in the state!!!  We tag along with the lucky hunter and his guide Kevin Johnson from the Big Boys Adventure series as we take on the woods of northern Michigan.  We also get to take in a little bass fishing in the down time on this hunt with Kevin's family.  Speaking of bass fishing we head south to the mouth of the Detroit River to find some smallmouth with a father-son team as well as good friend Gerry Gostenik.  Lots to see on this week's show - enjoy!!!

This week on Thursday night PBS is running a Ken Burns special on the National Parks.  So, since we won't air on Thursday anywhere but we do air on Saturday we wanted to bring you a few stories you may have seen before.  Either way the first story this week is a grouse and woodcock hunt from last year in northern Mi where we really get into the birds and have some great dog work.  We then show you a bow camp from yesteryear.  This story jumped out to me because one of the guys hunting is using a long bow and that is what I am hunting with this year.    We also have a recipe that is perfect for deer camp.  So sit back and enjoy this first show of October... hope you get to spend some time in the bow stand!!!

 This week takes us above the bridge.  We start with some lake trout fishing from Lake Superior on the big reef with some NRC commissioners. Taking us out were the good folks from Shelter Bay Charters. Good old Bob Garner was along on this trip and that always makes for a fun trip.  We also stop in with NAVHDA or the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Assoc.  We show what they have been working on all summer to get their dogs ready for the season.  We end the show with a early doe hunt from southern Mi with a first time hunter.  Thanks for watching...

 We start this week's show from my hometown of Ludington!  We hit the big water with the boys from Blue Fairways.  On the boat today we had some PBS viewers that joined us from WGVU in Grand Rapids.  After that we head to the deer woods where our friends from MUCC give us some good pointers on food plots and scouting cameras.  The last story in our show is from Saginaw Bay.  We join good friend Steve Vandemark  and some young ladies who don't have a chance to fish very often.  Also don't forget our Meijer contest is drawing to a close!!!! The paddle sports take over this week!!!  We start with a story on how to outfit and fish out of a kayak.  We are joined by Craig Kivi from Golden Drake Outdoors.  After we show you how to fish from a kayak we take some canoes and kayaks and head north.  We hit the Sturgeon river with Doc Fletcher who has written a few books on canoeing Michigan rivers.  If you want to try a trip like this contact the folks at the Silent Sport Lodge - they can hook you up!  Paddle on....

 This show is all about big lake fishing!!!  We are out of the port of Saugatuck with 2 of the best captains in the state, the boys from Best Chance Too.  We have 2 full boats of sponsors and some folks who won the trip through a PBS auction.  We have a great time and catch some nice fish.  If your looking for a great place to stay while in Saugatuck check out the Bayside Inn.  After we hit the water we will also stop in with our buddies from Pheasants Forever and talk habitat and what you can be expecting this time of year.

 This week we start with one of the most coveted hunts we have here in our great state, the northern Michigan elk hunt.  We are only a week or so away from that hunt and this should get those lucky hunters excited for what is to come.  We also stop in with good friend Pete Odland to take a look at a new product for physically challenged hunters, the Liberator.  Plus, we take a look at a new archery target the Arrowmat.  We round out the show by promoting a kids event happening at an MUCC club. 

 This week's show takes us to the Au Sable River.  We start by trying to fish the hex hatch with some guys from the Old Au Sable Fly shop.  The guys we were fishing with were part of the group Chasin Steel, some bluegrass boys from the U.P.  We then head to the Mio area for an afternoon float trip.  After that we head south to get some gun tips from the guys at Williams Gun Sight.  We round out the show with a summer time deer hunt where the mosquitoes made it almost unbearable to be in the woods.  A lot of variety on this week's show.

 This week we start on the St. Clair River chasing monster sturgeon after dark.  We also have this year's bow review that MUCC produced for us.  We also highlight a fishing camp in the Onaway area geared at kids.  

 On this week's show we are fishing the Manitou Islands a couple different times.  We start with some legislators from around the state and end up with some good old boys tent camping in the same area.  This part of the state is very special and worth seeing in person!!!  We also have a few Muzzleloader tips for you smokepole folks.   

 We start on Mona Lake just outside of Muskegon on this week's show.  We are targeting walleye and catching catfish with a great guy named Ernie Miller.  Ernie guides in this part of the state.  You can check him out at Michiganfishguide.com.  We then travel a little east on the Grand River to actually go after some monster catfish with Dan Lipski.  We have been out with Dan before.  He is at riverkatfishing.com.  We also have some sturgeon news for you on this week's show as well as a great kids' bass tournament.  Check it out.....

 This week we start north of the bridge fishing herring near Drummond Island.  Then we head to the Sleeping Bear Dunes to take a cruise around that part of our state.  From there we visit with a new Michigan fly rod manufacturer, the guys at Mystic Fly Rods.  We also have a viewer video to show you this week.  Lots to see on this week's show.

This show is a pretty special one for me.  On this show I was able to take both my wife Dana and by mom Brenda out on a turkey hunt.  We had a great time in my hometown of Ludington.  We also stop in with our friends from Pheasants Forever.  We get some good food plot tips from the state's habitat chair.  We also stop in with Ted and Shemane Nugent to get a very good recipe from the whack master himself.
